Since the well-known roast chicken food chain company took over the operations of the professional basketball league, there is no doubt that the Chooks-to-Go MPBL Invitational tournament that is currently being played at the Mall of Asia Arena is only one of the many plans that have been lined up for the professional basketball league.
After the 13-day tournament in the FIBA format, the commissioner of the MPBL, Kenneth Duremdes, revealed that there are plans for the league to have a preseason tournament around February of 2022, and eventually the regular season, which normally begins on June 12 (Philippine Independence Day).
When Senator Manny Pacquiao, the founder of the MPBL, was asked about the potential of the organization working on a women’s league, he responded by saying that the MPBL is pretty much open to the notion.
“Yung mga kababaihan, puwede naman silang isali rin. Pacquiao asked, “How are we going to do in the MPBL women’s basketball?” on the first day of the Invitational, which took place on December 11 of this year.
Cholo Villanueva, the current head tactician for the Manila Stars, is the type of coach who would be most likely to value the advancement, if such a person were to exist.
“That is wonderful news. “There are a lot of talented women’s basketball players from the Philippines, but they are just not given the exposure or opportunity to showcase their talents,” said Villanueva after the Stars routed the EMKAI Rizal Xentro Mall Golden Coolers on Monday, 89-59. The game took place in the Philippines.
If Chooks-to-Go decides to give this opportunity to the women’s basketball league in the Philippines, the league is going to explode in popularity, and I have no doubt that there will be fans of it.
Villanueva was the head coach of the women’s basketball team at De La Salle for the majority of his career there. Over the past 10 years, the De La Salle women’s basketball team has been a consistent challenger in the UAAP.
Camille Claro, Khate Castillo, and Snow Penaranda are just three of the many players who have flourished after leaving the collegiate ranks under Villanueva’s direction. These three players are currently competing in the WNBL, which is the only professional women’s basketball league in the country at this time.
It would be interesting to see if, in addition to the main league, 3 on 3 and women’s basketball would also be accommodated to further grow the sport in the country across all sectors. This would be the case given that FIBA has been monitoring the operations of the MPBL ever since the league turned professional.
And Villanueva, who has been a supporter of women’s baseball for a very long time, thinks that a possible WMPBL would surely be pertinent.
“Women gamers are really talented players. Observing them is a lot of pleasure. They provide a great deal of amusement. They would have a market for women’s basketball as well as a fanbase for the sport. “That is extremely significant information for our company,” he stated.
