The MPBL recently held games in the city of Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao, the league’s founder and a legend in his own right as a boxer.
In General Santos City and Sarangani, basketball supporters cheered on their home team at MPBL games hosted by OKBET, a local gaming site.
On September 5 at the Lagao Gymnasium, former senator Manny Pacquiao and General Santos Mayor Lorelie Geronimo-Pacquiao threw out the ceremonial first pitch to kick off the “OKBet Goes to GenSan and Sarangani” series.
These contests are a part of the sportsbook’s statewide initiative to raise awareness of the MPBL and to honor the unique cultural traditions of each province.
The first two days of the event, September 5 and 6, took place at the Lagao Gymnasium and coincided with the Tuna Festival in General Santos City. Bacoor City Strikers, Quezon City MG Cars, Bacolod Bingo Plus, and the host GenSan Warriors OKBET were some of the teams who competed.
On September 9 and 10, teams from Bacolod, Quezon City, Muntinlupa, and the host Sarangani Marlins OKBET resumed MPBL action in the Sarangani Provincial Capitol Gymnasium in Alabel, Sarangani.
As of the 5th of September, Bacoor City had beaten Quezon City 96-77, and GenSan had beaten Bacolod 76-73, both of which were vital games in the South Division.
Bacolod dominated Quezon City by 79 points (final score) on September 6, while GenSan edged out Bacoor by a score of 75–74.
Bacolod beat Muntinlupa 93-83 on September 9, while Sarangani defeated Bacolod 90-67.
While Sarangani lost to the visiting Bacolod five, 74-89, Quezon City beat Muntinlupa, 79-77, on September 10.
Outside of the realm of simple sports pleasure, OKBet used the two days in between games to continue its series of CSR projects.
The corporation gave ten wheelchairs to the city of GenSan to help with their disability inclusion efforts. On September 7th, City Councilman Orlando Acharon represented Geronimo-Pacquiao in the City Hall in General Santos for the official handover ceremony.
Additionally, OKBet arranged for Sarangani head basketball coach John Kallos to host a clinic for local youngsters in the Sarangani Provincial Capitol Gymnasium.
Sarangani had a 13-5 record this season, good for fifth place in the league. With a 12-5 record, GenSan is in seventh place.
Nueva Ecija, who has yet to lose in 18 games, is in first place in the 22-team competition. Batangas City is in second place with 16-2.
